About Hepatitis C Triple Therapy

“Triple therapy with peginterferon, ribavirin, and a direct antiviral agent is considered the next therapeutic regimen for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.” – Atif Zaman, MD, MPH

-First A Little Bit About Hep C

About 180 million people worldwide are infected with Hepatitis C which is a disease that affects the Liver.  It is known as an infectious disease, and that means it is possible to infect others if you have it yourself.   Don’t worry, there aren’t many ways you can get Hepatitis C, unless you are an intravenous drug user or engage in anal or rough sex.   One problem with this virus is that it’s not very obvious if one is infected.  Hepatitis C is what we call “asymptomatic”.  A person may be infected for years and  not show any symptoms.  This is one reason why it spreads with such ease.

There are a at least 6 different genotypes (different variations) of this virus, but Hepatitis C genotype 1a is the most aggressive and more difficult to treat.  It also happens to be the more prevalent genotype in the United States and Europe.

-What Is Triple Therapy?

Before just recently the gold standard in Hepatitis C treatment was Pegylated Interferon Treatment with Ribavirin for 24-48 weeks.  This consisted of taking interferon shots and Ribavirin tablets.  The success rate for those that had genotype 1a averaged to about 50%.

With the new and proven Triple Therapy, success rates have gone up to 75%!  This treatment consists of using Pegylated Interferon, Ribavirin, and Victrelis (boceprevir).   Victrelis is a direct acting antiviral drug and protease inhibitor that works against the Hepatitis C virus.  The other drug that’s out is called Incivek (telapravir).  Using either one of these drugs in combination with PEG-3 Interferon and Ribavirin is today’s new Hep C treatment.  It’s important to note that there has been some talk that Incievek is stronger than Victrelis, however it has a side effect of moderate to bad skin rashes.  Those hep c patients that mentioned this difference did discover that the study group with Victrelis had a few patients leave before completion.  This is unsubstantiated but may be behind the difference in outcome.  Most Doctors say either drug will work effectively.  Make sure that you talk to your doc about any possible difference!

Hope this gave you some insight into the new Hep C treatment.  I will post updates as we learn more!
