Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself

There are many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted.  Recovery has begun for millions of individuals with this straightforward guide. through personal examples and exercises, readers are shown how controlling others forces them to lose sight of their own needs and happiness.  I personally recommend this book for the beginner at all of this.  If you have recently found out about a friend’s or loved one’s substance abuse, this is the book for you.

Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction
This is the story of a very successful student athlete that had the world in the palm of his hand.  Seduced by the illicit world of drugs and alcohol, he quickly found himself caught in the clutches of addiction.  Told from the perspective of his father David, it opens up painful memories while making the argument that addiction is a disease.  Achingly honest, it chronicles the betrayal, pain, and terrifying question marks that haunt the loved ones of an addict.  If you’re a parent of a teen addict or are suspicious of your teen, this is a great way to get a discussion going.
