Codependent Relationships

Codependency Recovery|Stop Being Controlling

The concept of codependent relationships is one that needs to be addressed in every addicts recovery.  If you have ever watched the show “Intervention”, you know that codependency recovery is the number one goal in the first stage of the plan.  There is always one or more family members or friends that need to co-exist with the addict and by association,  help that addict continue to keep abusing substances.  This not the intention of course, but that is the effect of those actions and behaviors.  In the show,  the co-dependent person no longer agrees to continue their relationship with the addict until they agree to get help for the substance abuse problem.  Often the codependent agrees to go to rehab as well.

Now that we understand the basic concept of this issue, we need to get into the details of what all is involved.  I believe the best way to really totally understand this is to read this same book that I have.  I’ve also shared it with my family and friends that are in this same situation.

Best Codependency Books

codependent no more

The book is called “Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself”  By Melodie Beattie.  She wrote this book while a broke mother of two children.  At the time she was a writer for a small newspaper.  Ms. Beattie had a hard time getting this idea published for awhile.  All the book publishers told her that they did not see Codependency as a marketable issue.  Well they were wrong! Now she has several best selling books out and I started with this one!

This book really goes into the specifics of the codependent relationship and addresses the guilt felt by some codependents, and the need they have to fix everyone that has problems around them.  This book makes the person who desperately feels that they can keep track of an addicted soul, realize that it is OK to let go.  In fact, it is preferable and better for both parties if this is accomplished.

I really enjoyed this book as it helped my family deal with the feelings that they had towards me as an active heroin/cocaine user.   If you need to free yourself from an unhealthy relationship, Get this book now!  You won’t regret it!
